Thinking
Phase 1 carried two PYPL lessons forward — the dual-gate hug rule (trend separation and conviction are independent, non-fungible gates) and its 11-02 refinement (the override only unlocks when the FROZEN gate itself starts moving positively — an upgrade, a PT raise, a sell dropping off — never when the already-cleared trend gate merely steepens further). I came into Phase 2 primed to re-test both gates on PYPL independently.
Stops first: check_stocks_stops fired no mechanical exit — all 12 sit above their stops. It flagged 9 as ADD-RISK (ABBV, CVX, DIS, ISRG, TSLA, V, XOM armed [trail/breakeven]; AAPL, COST, ROK about to arm), so no adds to any of those.
Discretionary pass (a): no holding shows a sell signal in the research — all 12 are fast ≥ slow (bullish or hold). The three reds — AAPL -2.6% (fast 342.2378 > slow 334.0391), MSFT -3.6% (529.1585 > 513.8602), UNH -2.5% (400.8082 > 390.3717) — are all trend-intact consolidations below their fast MA, not broken theses; UNH analysts remain 8/19/5/0/0. No earnings miss. The DIS layoff headlines are attention-only; DIS trend stays bullish (+2.5% sep, price 112.74 above fast MA). Hold all 12.
New-buys pass (b): 15 buy candidates. Nine are holdings, all ADD-RISK → no adds. Six are fresh: LLY (geometry -8.6%), MRNA (-12.6%), AMGN (-2.0%), TLN (-1.5%), REGN (-10.5%) all reject on negative stop-vs-slow-MA geometry (a routine pullback runs through the initial stop). Only PYPL clears geometry (+2.6%). Running the dual-gate rule: the trend gate kept steepening (separation 56.5987 vs 55.2444 = +2.45%, up from +1.93% on 11-02; price 58.52, now +3.4% over the fast MA — a more-extended hug). But the conviction gate did the opposite of healing: analysts went 4/10/34/3/0 → 4/10/33/5/0 — the hold wall ticked down one but TWO fresh outright sells appeared (3→5). My override clause requires the frozen gate to move positively; here it moved negatively. That is a decisive PASS, not "closer." Macro is mildly risk-off (VIX 21.15, up from 19.42; 10Y 4.94%; curve +0.32%), which further argues against forcing a marginal entry.
Decision
No mechanical stops fired; no discretionary exits — hold all 12. No new buy. Every held buy candidate is ADD-RISK (no adds); the fresh names LLY/MRNA/AMGN/TLN/REGN all reject on negative geometry; and PYPL — trend gate steepening to +2.45% with +2.6% geometry — fails the conviction gate, which deteriorated to 4/10/33/5/0 (sells 3→5). 0 of 3 daily buys used, cash stays $37,412.27.
Lesson learned
PYPL ran the dual-gate hug rule forward a fourth time and, for the first time, the FROZEN conviction gate actually MOVED — but downward. The trend gate kept steepening (separation +1.48% on 10-30 → +1.93% on 11-02 → +2.45% today, 56.5987 vs 55.2444; price 58.52, +3.4% over the fast MA) and geometry stayed positive (+2.6%). Meanwhile analysts went 4/10/34/3/0 → 4/10/33/5/0: one hold reclassified, but as TWO fresh outright sells (3→5), even as PayPal raised 2026 EPS guidance. My 11-02 override clause said the override unlocks only when the frozen gate starts moving positively (upgrade, PT raise, sell dropping off). This run tested the mirror case and sharpens it. Generalized principle: a frozen conviction gate is not binary (frozen vs. thawing-positive) — track its direction. When the already-cleared trend gate keeps steepening AND the conviction gate moves the WRONG way (sells rising, holds converting to sells, downgrades), that is not "still frozen, keep waiting" — it is active bearish confirmation that widens the divergence, and the correct read is a firmer PASS, not a closer call. A rising-sell count against a strengthening tape is the Street explicitly fading the rally. Falsifiable: if PYPL now rolls over while sells stay elevated, the deteriorating-conviction-as-confirmation read was right; if instead it breaks higher and the new sells get reversed (upgrades, PT raises), then the sells were capitulation noise at a bottom and I over-weighted a lagging, contrarian-at-extremes signal.
