Thinking
Phase 1 carried two lessons forward. The 10-27 lesson: once candidates clear the hug-the-fast-MA trigger, rank first on real stop cushion (positive 50d vs stop), then on orthogonality. The 10-28 lesson: the hug trigger has a hidden pre-condition — meaningful fast-over-slow separation and real analyst conviction, or it's just a ranging stock. I ran both gates over today's board.
The book's one real problem resolved itself mechanically: NOW had collapsed from a +14.2% peak to -18.9%, and its trail stop (146.56) fired — a clean -18.9% exit I didn't have to adjudicate. Among the 11 survivors, nothing showed a broken thesis: every holding carried a bullish MA trend and a buy/hold signal. MSFT is the only softness (-1.2%, price 523.80 below its fast MA 530.3138), but that's a hold, not a bearish crossover, so no discretionary exit — I don't churn healthy positions.
On new buys, I worked the whole buy-flagged list, not just my book. LLY (-5.4%), MRNA (-11.1%) and AMGN (+7.6% over fast, -1.1% geometry) are geometry/stretch rejects. PYPL has drifted to +2.5% over its fast MA (no longer a hug) with hold-dominated analysts (4/10/34/3/0) and a fresh Barclays cut to Underweight — exactly the thin-conviction false-positive my 10-28 lesson tells me to pass. The hard call was TLN: a textbook +0.23% hug, a powerful +9.2% fast/slow separation, an orthogonal Utilities sector (I hold zero), clean analysts (4/15/3/0/0). But its 50d vs stop is -0.6% — negative — so a reversion to its slow MA runs ~8.6% through the -8% stop. My 10-27 lesson ranks cushion FIRST, and the research note is explicit that negative geometry is a reject. The beautiful hug and orthogonality don't rescue a name that fails the primary cushion gate, so I passed TLN.
That left UNH as the one candidate clearing every gate: price 407.715 is +2.76% over fast MA 396.7572 (non-extended, under the 5% chase line), fast/slow separation +1.81% (a real trend, not glued), 50d vs stop +3.9% positive (a pullback to the 50d does not breach the stop), conviction 8/18/7/0/0 with zero sells, no earnings in the blackout window. The one knock is that it's a 3rd Healthcare name (ABBV, ISRG), but those are pharma and devices while UNH is managed care — different business risk under the same sector label — and no orthogonal-sector name cleared the cushion gate anyway.
Decision
Mechanical stop closed NOW (35.179947 @ 113.10, trail stop, -18.9%). No discretionary exits — held the other 11. One new buy: UNH, 11.920443 @ 407.85 (limit 408.68), $4,862.75, inside the 5% cap (~$4,870.75 of $97,416.28 equity). Passed TLN (negative -0.6% geometry despite a perfect hug + orthogonal Utilities), PYPL (thin conviction, Barclays Underweight), and LLY/MRNA/AMGN (geometry/stretch). 2 of 3 daily buys remain; I won't force a marginal second trade. Macro is calm-to-risk-on (VIX 16.91, curve +0.38%, GDP +3.4%), which supports carrying the trend-aligned book.
Lesson learned
The 10-27 lesson ranked cushion FIRST then orthogonality, but assumed both finalists already cleared the geometry gate; today TLN exposed the sharper form of that rule. TLN was the single best-looking name on the board by three independent measures: a textbook fast-MA hug (354.605 vs fast 353.7967, +0.23% over — tighter than anything else), the strongest trend separation of any candidate (fast/slow +9.2%: 353.7967 vs 324.1321), AND an orthogonal Utilities sector I hold zero of, with clean analysts (4/15/3/0/0). Every signal the 10-26/10-27/10-28 lessons reward said BUY. But its 50d vs stop was -0.6% — negative — meaning a routine reversion to the slow MA (~-8.6% from 354.605) runs clean through the -8% hard stop. I passed it and bought UNH instead: a plainer name (+2.76% over fast, +1.81% separation, 3rd Healthcare) but with +3.9% POSITIVE geometry. Generalized principle: positive stop geometry is not a tiebreaker or a ranking input — it is a hard veto that sits ABOVE hug-quality, trend-separation, orthogonality, and conviction combined. A name can win on all four of those and still be a correct pass if 50d vs stop is negative, because negative geometry means the trade's own normal pullback arms the stop against it — you'd be buying a position the mechanical exit is structurally positioned to sell at a loss. Check the geometry sign FIRST and reject on it before letting any amount of hug/separation/orthogonality appeal pull you in. Falsifiable: if over coming runs TLN pulls back toward its slow MA and would have stopped out (or chops) while UNH holds/advances from its positive-cushion entry, the geometry-veto was right; if instead TLN's strong trend separation carries it higher without ever revisiting the slow MA while UNH stalls on Healthcare concentration, then a sufficiently strong trend-separation + tight hug should be allowed to override a marginally-negative (-0.6%) geometry reading, and I over-applied the veto to a near-zero case.
