Thinking
Phase 1 set the floor: cash $43,217.09, equity $98,613.63, 11 open positions, 0 of 3 daily buys used, nothing pending, 5%/position cap = $4,930.63. The two carried-forward lessons both converge on one test: on a buy flag, the decisive line is where price sits relative to its OWN fast MA — hugging it (~0–2% over) with a positive geometry cushion is an at-trend entry to TAKE; stretched ~5%+ above it is chasing to PASS, even on a buy flag.
check_stocks_stops fired no mechanical exits — all 11 holdings sit above their stops. Pass (a), discretionary: every holding is buy/hold and bullish (fast ≥ slow) in the research, no broken thesis and no earnings miss, so I held all 11. Seven are flagged ADD-RISK (stop armed or about to arm), so adding to any of them was off the table anyway.
Pass (b), fresh candidates (names I do NOT hold): UNH, LLY, AMGN, ROK, PLTR. Measuring price vs fast MA: UNH 412.45 vs 392.7335 = +5.0% over (extended, and a 3rd Healthcare onto ABBV/ISRG); LLY 1288.165 vs 1214.8347 = +6.0% over with a thin +0.5% geometry (classic chasing per the 10-23 lesson); AMGN 446.75 vs 423.7985 = +5.4% over with the weakest analyst block (6/12/20/3/1). All three are extended Healthcare — reject. PLTR 199.04 vs 196.686 = +1.2% over (at-trend by proximity) but only +1.5% geometry, and a reversion to its slow MA (185.778) runs −6.7%, nearly the whole way to the −8% stop — exactly the thin-positive-geometry chasing the 10-23 lesson warns of, plus it would be a 4th Tech name. Pass.
ROK is the clean fit: price 435.48 vs fast MA 434.536 = +0.22% over — hugging the fast MA — with a genuine +7.4% 50d vs stop cushion; a routine reversion to its slow MA (430.1302) is only −1.2%, nowhere near the stop. Crucially it is an Industrial, orthogonal to my entire book (AAPL/MSFT/NOW Tech, ABBV/ISRG Healthcare, CVX/XOM Energy, V Financials, COST/TSLA Consumer, DIS Media — zero Industrials). The 10-23 lesson explicitly lamented having "no orthogonal sector to diversify into"; ROK supplies exactly that. Analyst support is lukewarm (6/10/17/0/0, holds dominate) and no earnings countdown is shown, but that is a soft caveat, not a reject, against an at-trend entry with real cushion and true diversification. Macro is tolerable: VIX 18.39, 10Y-2Y +0.32% positive.
Decision
No exits (mechanical or discretionary) — hold all 11. One new buy: ROK, 11.281056 @ 436.29 (limit 437.15), $4,922.73, inside the $4,930.63 cap. Passed UNH/LLY/AMGN as extended Healthcare and PLTR as thin-geometry 4th-Tech. 2 of 3 daily buys remain in reserve; cash now ~$38,294. Market open, no pending orders.
Lesson learned
The 10-26 lesson gave the entry trigger (hug the fast MA = take, stretched ≥5% over = pass); today showed how to RANK two names that both pass it, and that sector-orthogonality is the decisive discriminator — the piece the 10-23 lesson flagged as missing ("no orthogonal sector to diversify into"). Two candidates read at-trend by fast-MA proximity: PLTR 199.04 vs fast 196.686 (+1.2% over) and ROK 435.48 vs fast 434.536 (+0.22% over). But their geometry/concentration split them cleanly: PLTR carried only +1.5% 50d vs stop with a reversion-to-slow (185.778) of −6.7% — nearly the whole −8% stop, the thin-positive chasing shape — AND would have been a 4th Tech onto AAPL/MSFT/NOW; ROK carried a genuine +7.4% cushion (reversion-to-slow just −1.2%) AND was the FIRST Industrial in an all Tech/HC/Energy/Financial/Consumer/Media book. Generalized principle: once two candidates both clear the hug-the-fast-MA trigger, rank them first on real stop cushion (deep positive 50d vs stop / small reversion-to-slow beats thin-positive) and then on orthogonality — a non-extended at-trend name in a sector you hold ZERO of outranks an equally-at-trend name that would be the Nth holding in a sector you already stack, and that orthogonality is itself sufficient reason to overcome cash-is-a-position reluctance and deploy. Concentration is a real cost, not just a tiebreaker. Falsifiable: if over coming runs ROK holds/advances from its at-trend+orthogonal entry while the thin-geometry 4th-Tech skip (PLTR) stalls or reverts toward its slow MA, the "cushion-then-orthogonality ranking" was right; if instead PLTR keeps trending with its sector momentum while ROK drifts on weak Industrial analyst support (6/10/17/0/0, holds dominate), I over-weighted diversification over the stronger analyst/sector momentum and should let book-concentration cost less when the orthogonal name's conviction is clearly thinner.
