Thinking

My two live lessons both point the same way today. Lesson one: a single-name long has no defense against a market-wide risk-off day, so demand a stable/constructive tape before deploying. Lesson two: in a broad drawdown the MA screen self-empties to extended-meme buys only, and that absence IS the signal — capital preservation is the trade, not a cue to lower the bar.

The regime is exactly the one those lessons flag. Fear & Greed is 45 (Neutral, still soft), BTC dominance 60.1%, total mcap $2.69T, and breadth is deeply red — of the holdings, DOT -4.9%, NEAR -4.9%, APT -3.7%, ARB -2.4% on 24h. The news backdrop is risk-off too (BTC seeking support above $81K, ETFs bleeding $635M, AI-driven stock weakness) — context only, not a trade reason.

Buy side: only PEPE and MEW are flagged buy. PEPE is a meme at +12.7% 7d but -1.1% 30d and -84.4% from ATH, barely above its fast MA (price 0.0000043778 vs fast 0.00000419086). MEW is up +13.7% 7d on a razor-thin +0.1% MA cross (price 0.000466 vs fast 0.00045655), -96.4% from ATH. Both are extended laggard pops on a lone 7d run into a sliding tape — the precise setup my lessons say to fade, not chase. Every quality name with a bullish MA cross (BTC, AVAX, DOT, NEAR, APT, SUI, STX, AAVE, RENDER, QNT, ...) has price UNDER its fast MA — no decisive reclaim anywhere. The menu self-emptied exactly as lesson two predicts.

Holdings: check_crypto_stops fired nothing. APT (now -15.0%, stop 0.67609 hard), ARB (-15.8%, stop 0.161294), DOT (-13.6%, stop 0.969486), NEAR (-14.0%, stop 4.20922) are all red but above their hard floors with peaks that never armed the trail. Their MA crosses are still bullish even with price below the fast MA — theses bruised, not broken. Cutting four reds into a broad down day is panic-selling at local lows, which the ratcheting stops already govern mechanically.

Decision

Held all positions. No exits, no buys. The stop pass fired nothing and no holding warrants a discretionary override. The only two buy candidates, PEPE and MEW, are extended memes on marginal fast-MA reclaims in a risk-off tape — fade, don't chase. Within caps regardless: $0.00 of $50 daily spent, $50.00 left, 0 of 3 new buys used. Cash $10.28, book value $27.31 at review; desk-traded P&L realized (30d) +$0.00, unrealized -$2.99, total -$2.99.

Lesson learned

"Capital preservation by holding" is not cost-free in a PERSISTENT risk-off drift: a book of bullish-cross-but-sub-fast-MA names parked on hard floors bleeds a little more each run while the stops only cap the tail, never the grind. Across three straight holds the desk unrealized drifted -$2.26 (10-24 0716) → -$2.74 (10-24 1916) → -$2.99 (10-25 0716) — same four reds (APT/ARB/DOT/NEAR), each now -13% to -16% and all still below their fast MAs with crosses that stay bullish only on lagging MAs. The prior lesson (hold, deploy nothing when the menu self-empties) is right that NOT adding is correct, but it quietly reframes a slow drawdown as a win. Generalize: when the SAME reds sit sub-fast-MA for multiple runs and unrealized keeps grinding worse, holding is the least-bad option, not a good one — flag it as managed bleed, and if a name's bullish cross finally rolls over (fast crosses below slow) treat that as the thesis breaking and let the discretionary exit act before the hard floor does, rather than riding every red all the way down to its stop.
